Transport

The journey to our destination can often be as important as the destination itself.   We hope that users of ecothreesixty.com will think about the effect that their journey has on the planet and its people.  Most travellers can keep their Carbon footprint quite low if they are prepared to travel via the surface, rather than taking to the skies.

Time is usually a huge consideration when people travel and it would be ideal for the environment if everyone took their holidays in their own country, but not everyone is always going to opt for a "staycation", but people are always moving and we realise that there is always a trade off between peoples desire to visit new places.

One of the key benefits of travelling overland or by sea is that you are far more likely to have unforgettable experiences green travel, which air travel could never hope to offer the inquisitive and intrepid traveller.  So wherever possible, why not let opportunity take you places you could never find on your own.

Trains/Rail

In many parts of the world, trains are still the backbone of many transport networks, and they can also be a great people to see the country and meet its people.  There are many great train journeys through out the world, which will enable you to access remote areas, that you could never hope to see, using any other form transport.  Travelling via rail is often considered by some experienced travellers to be among the most romantic forms of travel.

Buses

Obviously using local bus services wherever you are is an experience that can differ widely through out the world and it is often very specific to the part of the world you are in.  It can often the best way to get around, sometimes it is the only way to get around; but in some countries it may also be dangerous.  So obviously like any intelligent traveller, make sure you do a little bit of research first and make sure that you are not likely to have any unwelcome surprises.

Cycling

Cycling gives you a great deal of freedom.   The one key consideration is obviously the level of your cycling ability and being realistic about how far you can travel and how must stuff you will need.  That said cycling is the obvious choice if you want to travel overland, but want to travel by the probably the most environmentally friendly means.  It is rightly considered by many travellers as one of the most adventurous ways to travel in the modern world.

Car Travel

While car travel is responsible for a lot of damage to the environment and exploitation world wide, it is one of the realities of our planet, and travelling via car is still preferable to travelling by air.  Things for travellers to consider are things like; can you travel to your destination via public transport and then perhaps hire a car when you have arrived, rather than travelling hundreds of miles in your own car?  Also can there are ways of cutting down the amount of carbon your car emits by keeping the tyres at the appropriate pressure and not driving over 60 mph.  Also if you are going to rent a car while travelling, perhaps you could rent a hybrid car, most major rental firms do offer a hybrid model option in North America and Europe.

Walking/Hiking

On foot may not always be possible as a means of transport, but it is one of the most environmentally and it means that you are in your environment, there is no separation between you and the world around you, and if you allow enough time for you to arrive there, you may have some of the best experiences of your life.

Sail

Obviously harnessing the power of the wind is an incredibly environmentally beneficial.  It is also one of the most inspiring ways to travel, obviously it also has its limitations, but it certainly beats waiting around in departure lounges and going through the rigmarole of flying.
